Masecraft Supply Company has always been the leader in developing new materials for knife handles and inlays, because that’s all we do and we’re passionate about it.
Several of the people involved in Masecraft have a background in the plastics industry and an interest in and knowledge of the early plastics. Examples of these early plastic materials include Celluloid, the first synthetic plastic, and Casein, a protein plastic material made from skim milk. Both of these materials were developed in the late 1800’s as replacements for natural materials and were used extensively in the cutlery, musical instrument and many other industries until they were replaced by newer plastics developed after World War II. However, none of the newer plastics have the beautiful natural look, excellent colors/patterns and easy workability of Celluloid and Casein.
Approximately 13 years ago we re-introduced Celluloid to the U.S. cutlery industry and, since that time, many thousands of Celluloid knives have been made and sold. In 2003 we were able to make Casein available again and new Casein handled knives are now being eagerly sought by collectors. Extra care is required to work with both of these materials but the results are well worth it.
We were the originators of the “Stag” and “Impala” carved/dyed bone and buffalo horn pattern slabs. The prototypes for all five of our patterns were hand-carved here at Masecraft. We were also the first to offer Colored Carbon Fiber sheets in Red and Blue as well as G-10 Metallic 2 x 2 Twill laminated sheets in Silver, Blue and now Gold.
Masecraft Supply Company is also the only US licensed manufacturer of “ABALAM”, the laminated shell product developed in 1998 and now commonly known as “pearl laminated veneer sheet” (U.S. Patent No. 5,776,581). This material has revolutionized the inlay business and been well accepted as a handle material for knives.
In 2003 we introduced our new Stagalike cast, dyed polyurethane slabs, rounds, carvers and grips. These pieces look exactly like the best India Stag you have ever seen because the molds were made from retainers of the best stag we ever received which were accumulated over the years.
In 2004 we developed a line of “Jungle” polyester bar and rod materials in several patterns including Jungle Camouflage, Cheetah, Snow Leopard and Zebra. The pattern in this material is not just on the surface – it goes all the way through the material allowing it to be radiused or turned without losing the pattern.
Our newest material is “Moon Glow II” photo luminescent polyester sheet, which replaces our earlier acrylic version. This material is more uniform in thickness and less translucent while still exhibiting a bright, long lasting glow.
We are continually on the lookout for more new materials to expand your options and we welcome your ideas and suggestions.
